Sport Development works within Oldham’s communities to develop and sustain opportunities for children, young people and their families to take part in sport and physical activity provision.
The team aims to meet the needs of the community, within the community itself by using school facilities, community venues, and parks and open spaces. Activities are delivered across the borough through the Sports Provision for Young People (SPYP) programme, which provides universal, targeted and specialist provision.
By working in partnership with communities and other local organisations the team works to identify and address local issues through consultation and structures around Oldham’s Locality Agenda.
Sport Development continues to seek and facilitate links from schools into community and club sport. Oldham also has a Local Area Agreement (LAA) target to increase the percentage of young people aged 5-16 years regularly taking part in a minimum of 1 hour of sport in the community per week. In December 2007 a representative survey carried out by Oldham Sport Development showed that 87% of young people are currently meeting this target. This exceeds the target of 82%.
