Since it’s creation in 2005, the Oldham Borough Games has gone from strength to strength whilst retaining its main aim of bringing communities of Oldham together. The purpose of the project is to assemble squads in each of the selected sports, develop the sporting skills of those young people whilst fostering a sense of team spirit and togetherness, culminating in competition with the other five district areas on the day of the games.
Squads are put together in each of the six district areas across the borough; West Oldham, East Oldham, Chadderton, Failsworth & Hollinwood, Saddleworth & Lees, and Royton & Shaw. The selected sports and age groups will vary from year to year. In June 2009 young people took part in football, tag rugby, cricket, tennis and dance. Past games have been held at Hathershaw, Royton and Crompton, and Radclyffe Schools, but in 2009 the games were moved to Alexandra Park to coincide with the Oldham Youth Alliance Fun Day. West Oldham won the first three Borough Games but the recent winners have been Royton & Shaw in 2008 and Failsworth & Hollinwood in 2009.
The search for teams for the next Borough Games in June 2010 will begin in earnest in the New Year. Watch this space for details of sports and how to take part.
