In 2006, Oldham Council, in partnership with Tameside Council and Rochdale Council, submitted joint scheme bids to the Sustrans Connect2 project that would form part of a package of cycling and walking schemes nationwide to be entered in to ‘The Peoples £50 Million Lottery Giveaway’ competition.
The Oldham/Tameside scheme represents the construction of a 140m long bridge crossing of the Medlock Valley at Park Bridge that would form part of the proposed National Cycle Network route along the former disused railway line linking Oldham town centre and Ashton town centre. The bridge straddles the borough boundary with approximately 50% of the bridge in each district. Other elements of the Oldham/Tameside scheme includes completing the traffic free route between the two town centres with a short 10m bridge over Alt Hill Lane.
The Rochdale/Oldham scheme centres around improvements to the Rochdale Canal corridor with new routes created to provide connections to the local towns of Littleborough, Rochdale, Heywood, Middleton and Shaw. The majority of this scheme is focussed on improvements in the Borough of Rochdale.
The two schemes beat over 500 other schemes nationwide to form part of the Sustrans Connect2 package of 99 schemes that won £50 million of National Lottery funding in December 2007.
The Oldham/Tameside scheme was put on a reserve list of 20 schemes supporting the select list of 79 schemes nationwide that includes the Rochdale/Oldham scheme.
