Each year the Council’s Road Safety Unit offers a comprehensive series of cycle training courses for children aged 9 and over. The safer cycling scheme is run mainly through schools during term time.
Courses are also provided at local leisure centres during school holidays. These are run over 4 sessions, each session being 10:00 to 11:45 in the morning or 14:00 to 15:45 in the afternoon.
For further information please contact the Road Safety Unit on tel. 0161 770 4343 or e-mail env.road.safety@oldham.gov.uk
All pupils taking part in the cycle training courses must provide their own bike that is suitable and in a road worthy condition. For some basic guidance on this, look at www.cyclesmart.org
The training provides on and off road practical sessions run by experienced Road Safety Officers to raise awareness and develop the skills needed for safer road use on a bike.
There is one course instructor to supervise every 6 children. Quiet residential streets are used for on road cycle training, enabling riders to be taught basic manoeuvres whilst sharing the road responsibility with other drivers and riders.
The cycle training course provides the child with basic safety skills and experience of the main manoeuvres associated with cycling on quiet roads. Completing the course and receiving a certificate, does not however give the child a licence that guarantees the safety of the child on the road. In particular, the use of busy roads should be avoided until the cyclist has gained enough experience to be able to deal confidently with quieter roads. The decision for the child to cycle unsupervised on roads should be made by the child’s parent(s) / guardian(s).
