Cycle Training

St. Mary's C of E High Crompton School pupils undertaking Bikeability cycle training

Child cycle training at schools

Unity Partnership, on behalf of Oldham Council, has obtained funding from Cycling England to provide cycle training, free of charge, to schools in the borough that have an approved School Travel Plan.

The School Travel Plan is a document that sets out how schools seek to achieve a more sustainable travel policy such as encouraging more children and parents to walk and cycle to school.

The funding provided by Cycling England for 2009/10 will allow up to 100 schools in the borough to receive cycle training for up to 24 pupils in each school.

The cycle training provided is known as Bikeability - the new cycle training standards adopted across England. The cycle training being provided is split into two levels:

  • Level 1 is based in the playground and teaches basic control skills and bicycle handling - signalling and braking correctly.
  • Level 2 is based on the road and is designed to demonstrate how the skills learnt in Level 1 can be applied in real life road situations. Trainees learn how to safely use road junctions and about road signs and markings. It is intended that Level 2 will give children the skills they need to cycle safely to school on quiet roads.

The training includes:

  • How to control your bike
  • Being able to look and assess traffic
  • Hand signals
  • Where to position yourself on the road

Bikeability instructors can also advise on safety equipment and how to check and do simple maintenance on a bike.
