Beijing Olympics cycling bronze medallist Chris Newton was honoured by the Borough at a recent Civic reception hosted by the Mayor of Oldham Councillor Shoab Akhtar and Council Leader Howard Sykes.
About 100 people, including members of Chris’ family, representatives from cycling and sporting bodies, the Youth Council, 2012 Olympic Games hopefuls, Honorary Freeman Norman Stoller, Honorary Alderman Ellen Brierley and others attended the presentation.
In his speech honouring Chris the Mayor described him as a credit to his family, the Borough and Middlesbrough where he was born.
He urged Oldham’s young sporting talent to use Chris as their inspiration and role model.
Councillor Akhtar acknowledged Chris’ impressive record and successes in cycling since starting to ride competitively at the age of 13. Apart from his bronze medal from the 2008 Olympics Chris has also won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Games and a silver at the Athens Games four years ago. He has also been world champion twice and a Commonwealth Games gold, silver and bronze medallist.
