2008 National Year of Reading kicked off in April and is a celebration of reading in all its forms. A range of partners in Oldham have joined together to deliver events and activities throughout the year, for children, families and adult learners alike!

The Year will promote reading as an enjoyable activity which is everywhere – it’s not just about books, it’s about reading anything, anywhere and anytime.

There’s a new theme each month and themes throughout the year are as diverse as sport, storytelling, identity, health, TV and film, poetry and technology.

Activities taking place throughout the year in Oldham’s libraries will focus on the monthly themes and include author visits; family activities; themed reading group reads; sci fi writing workshops, poetry performances, writing workshops and children’s sessions; coffee mornings; sports reading and writing; book reviews; and film screenings.

Oldham Lifelong Learning Service will be running fun activities, events, courses and workshops throughout the year, many of which will be delivered in schools, community centres and Children's Centres.  Particular emphasis will be placed on the family learning together and enjoying reading together. You can read a presentation by the Oldham Family Learning English Class that formed part of the successful Oldham launch on 28 April.

As well as the activities taking place in conjunction with Oldham Libraries and Oldham Lifelong Learning Service, individual schools across the Borough will be organising their own events to celebrate National Year of Reading including guest storytelling sessions, author visits and special activities to develop their own gifted and talented readers. The Children, Young People and Families Directorate Executive Leadership Team are all participating by going into schools and sharing a story with the children.
