Hospital Teaching Service

Q. If my child goes into hospital how do they access support from the hospital?

If your child is in hospital for more than five days they will be supported by a member of the Home and Hospital Teaching Service.

Q. What if my child is on an adult ward?

The Hospital will tell the Home and Hospital Teaching Service about your child to ensure they receive support.

Q. How do I arrange for my child to be taught if they are absent from school because of illness but are not in hospital?

A referral may be made directly to the service by a parent or by the pupil's school. Home tuition will only be provided if your child is going to be away from school from more than three weeks.

Q. How will school know my child is being taught?

The teaching staff will liaise with school about work.

Q. If my child is ill and is being taught at home what must I, as a parent, provide?

If your child is being taught at home you must provide somewhere suitable to work . There must also be another adult in the house during teaching sessions.

Q. Will my child who is in Year 10 or 11 be able to continue with GCSE's?

Yes. For all pupils the Home and Hospital Teaching Service will liaise with school to ensure that your child continues with work they were doing at school.

Q. Will my child be taught every day?

Your child will not be taught every day. They will have two or three teaching sessions per week.

Q. Will my child be taught at home or in a special unit?

This will depend on the illness of your child. Most of the teaching will be done in the pupil's home but some pupils will benefit from coming into Northgate House for some group work.

Q. My daughter is pregnant. How can she continue her education?

The Home and Hospital Teaching Service also support pregnant schoolgirls and school –age mothers. Your daughter will be supported to continue her education. Childcare can be provided for the baby until it is six months old.

Q. My child lives in Oldham but doesn't go to an Oldham school. Will they be eligible for home tuition?

If your child lives in Oldham they are eligible to receive home tuition.

Q. My child goes to a school in Oldham but does not live in Oldham. Will they be able to receive home tuition?

A child who does not live in Oldham is not eligible to receive home tuition but we would refer your child to the appropriate Education Authority for home teaching.

Q. Do we have to pay for support from the Home and Hospital Teaching Service?

No. The service is provided by the Education & Culture Department.
