New registration arrangements

One of the big changes to the way childcare and early education is regulated was the new registration arrangements which began in April 2007, with a voluntary option for childcare providers.

As of September 2008, the new legislation came into full effect and Ofsted now hold two registers:

The Early Years Register

  • For those delivering the new Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for children from birth to five.

The Childcare Register

There are two parts to the Childcare Register:

  • The Compulsory Register - for those offering childcare for 5-7 year olds.
  • The Voluntary Register - for providers not legally required to register. This register is suitable for those who currently provide care for children aged 8 and over, and those who operate for under two hours each day within the required restrictions.
