It’s my future, help shape it

Oldham has many great prospects… and now we have a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Oldham Council has £230 million to spend on transforming secondary education so we can improve our schools and also to make Oldham an even better place to live, learn and bring up a family. We’ve drawn up exciting plans which we think will benefit everyone in Oldham, now we want you to tell us what you think of them.

We’re proposing to close Breeze Hill, Counthill, Kaskenmoor, South Chadderton and Grange Schools, to replace them with three new academy schools on new sites, and to expand Hathershaw School. The proposals also include closing Our Lady’s and St Augustine of canterbury Roman Catholic high schools and opening a new Roman Catholic high school on a new site. Every other secondary school in Oldham would also be refurbished or rebuilt and receive massive investment in new IT. We also want everyone in Oldham to benefit from wonderful new facilities for sports, the arts, health and learning at our new schools.

Most of the money to transform our schools is coming from the Government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, representing the biggest single investment in schools ever made. But our plans are not just about buildings. Our proposals are aimed at changing the way our children are taught.

We want to deliver a greater range of academic and vocational courses and make greater use of new technology so Oldham’s youngsters can grasp the opportunities that will be available to them.

Our new schools will be equipped with the latest facilities and others will be refurbished so they are can deliver the 21st century education our children will need. And while some of the schools that have served us so well will close, their strengths and their excellent teachers will be at the foundation of our future schools.

Our vision is to provide better secondary schools to improve educational standards and also schools where young people from all Oldham’s communities can learn together and realise their full potential. We also want our schools to be 21st century centres of learning so that they help to regenerate the Borough by providing access to a wide range of facilities such as information technology, health, sports and arts facilities that benefit the whole community.

A better education for every child will benefit everyone in Oldham, but we also want to make sure that everyone benefits in more practical ways too. We want our new schools to be centres for the whole community with facilities for the arts, sport and health open to everyone, young and old. These new facilities would also be shared with other schools so every pupil, no matter which school they attend, could benefit. We are also aiming to achieve mixed schools where all Oldham’s diverse communities can grow up and learn together, and every child has the very best chance of success.

We are living in a rapidly changing world, which offers tremendous opportunities for those equipped to take them. Education is the key gift that we can give our children to help them create happy futures. Let’s make sure we make the most out of this opportunity and transform secondary education across Oldham.
