Book of condolence

First elected to her seat in 2004 as a Labour Councillor, Barbara had played a prominent role at Oldham Council in her capacity as the first-ever Chair of the Co-operative Commission, which was established in summer 2011. The Commission played an integral role in guiding the Local Authority’s move towards becoming a Co-operative Council.

Under Councillor’s Dawson’s stewardship members of the Commission – who included local residents, public and private sector partners, and representatives from the voluntary sector – made important recommendations which saw the Borough adopt a Co-operative Charter and an Ethical Framework.  

Councillor Dawson was a member of the Failsworth and Hollinwood District Partnership. She also contributed passionately to the work of outside bodies, including Voluntary Action Oldham, and was Chair of Governors at Failsworth School.

Members of the public, friends and colleagues are invited to pay their own personal tributes in this online Book of Condolence. Books are also available at the Civic Entrance (formerly Rochdale Road Reception) and at Failsworth Town Hall during normal opening hours.
