Well lit roads not only help to reduce traffic accidents but also help in reducing crime and fear of crime against people and property. They also help to deter anti-social behaviour. There are over 23,000 street lights and 3,500 illuminated traffic signs and bollards on Oldham Borough’s highways. Every street light is subject to a major planned maintenance regime, every four years, which involves cleaning the lantern, changing the lamp, and checking/testing all the electrical equipment.
The Highways Maintenance and Street Lighting Section of the Environmental Services Directorate is responsible for the design, installation, repair and maintenance of street lighting within the Borough. It also designs and installs street lights on new residential and industrial estates on behalf of private developers. Such lighting schemes are adopted by the Council upon completion.
The section is also involved in the design and installation of Festival lighting in Oldham Town Centre and other District Centres on behalf of both in-house and external Clients.
