Animal Diseases

The Council has a statutory role in preparation for, and during, outbreaks of notifiable diseases such as Avian Influenza (Bird Flu), Bluetongue and Foot and Mouth Disease among others. For the most up-to-date information on current outbreaks of these diseases please visit the relevant pages on the DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) website listed below under External Links.

Please note that during outbreaks of notifiable animal diseases, the normal regimes and regulations concerning movements of livestock, carcases and animal products are often suspended or substantially altered. If in doubt, always check the DEFRA website. Alternatively, you can:

  • telephone the DEFRA recorded information line on 0844 884 4600 (the information line will be updated regularly)
  • telephone DEFRA's helpline number on 08459 33 55 77
  • or email at: helpline@defra.gsi.gov.uk

If you need further individual advice concerning specific movements of livestock to and from Oldham, please contact the Council's Animal Welfare Section in the Environmental Services Directorate using the Contact Information details listed below.
