Several events will be taking places across the borough from Saturday 1 February until Sunday 9 February as Oldham takes part in Greater Manchester’s Hate Crime Awareness Week 2020.
Funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), these sessions have been organised to help residents gain a better understanding of what hate crime is and where to access appropriate support.
What is a Hate crime
A hate crime is any behaviour that someone thinks was caused by hostility, prejudice or hatred of; disability, gender identity, race, skin colour, nationality, ethnicity or heritage, religion, sexual orientation or alternative subculture.
It comes in many different forms such as physical attacks, a threat of attack and verbal abuse or insults, and anyone can be affected by such incidents.

Saturday 1 February
Oldham Athletic Community Trust launch annual ‘Kick racism out of football’ project
Location: Boundary Park, Furtherwood Rd, Oldham OL1 2PA
Workshop sessions with primary school pupils to build an understanding of what hate crime is through football and sports activities.
These workshops will also look at what hate crime looks and sounds like and what the consequences of hate crime are and its effect on individuals.
This comes as part of the launch of the annual ‘Kick racism out of football’ project which starts on Saturday 1 February.
Monday 3 February
Hate Crime Awareness information stall and interactive quiz

Would you like to be in with the chance of winning afternoon tea for two at Parliament Café and Deli?
All you have to do is take part in our hate crime related quiz and answer our five simple questions.
To enter, you must fill out an entry card at our information stall in Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre opposite H&M on the ground floor.
The stall will be run on Monday 3, Wednesday 5 and Friday 7 of February (10am–3pm).
You must me aged 16 to enter. Any entrant younger than 16 must have their parent or guardian’s permission.
The winning entry, which correctly answers all five questions, will be selected at random on Thursday 13 February and will be contacted via the details provided on their submission.

Oldham Personal Advocacy Ltd (OPAL) project launch
Working with people with learning disabilities and autism on two issues:
- Develop a better understanding of sexuality, gender identify and alternative lifestyles.
- Continue work to encourage and give people confidence to report hate crimes/incidents
A range of activities will also be delivered over the next 12 months designed to deepen people’s understanding of:
- Words/images which hurt relating to sexuality, gender identity and alternative lifestyles.
- Use of acceptable words for sexuality, gender identity and alternative lifestyles.
- What to say if you hear unacceptable words used.
- Why and how to report a hate crime/incident.

Oldham Play Action Group
Working in partnership with Reddy Computing, sessions will be delivered to feature ‘newsreaders’ broadcasting in the future, reporting on how some of these issues have been tackled.
Hate Crime will feature as part of a drama performance / visual arts project based on an Oldham estate, exploring the wider theme of fear, perception and violence in the area.
