School Attendance Improvement Service

The School Attendance Improvement Service provides specialist advice and support on all matters relating to the attendance of children and young people in Oldham Primary and Secondary schools.

Every Day Counts

The School Attendance Improvement Service aims to ensure children achieve their full potential educationally and socially as school attendance is crucial if children and young people are to gain full advantage from the learning, social, emotional and moral opportunities available in schools.

We provide support to:

  • 91 Primary, 15 Secondary and 2 Special schools
  • Families and children who reside in Oldham or attend an Oldham school
  • Statutory and Voluntary Agencies
  • Departments in the authority

SAIS Staff

  • The team is managed by a Service Manager and Deputy and complemented by the support of an Administrative Assistant and Clerical Officer.
  • Five Attendance Advisers: Support schools through attendance target setting, developing policies and initiatives and undertaking legal action where necessary. Each Adviser has a specialist area.
  • Five Attendance Officers: Support primary schools by responding to early signs of attendance/punctuality concerns through individual casework and group work and the implementation of whole school initiatives.

Service Standards

  • We work in partnership with schools and parents to meet/maintain the attendance targets set by the DCSF, the LA and schools.
  • We endeavour to provide both a professional and quality service to all our customers.
  • We follow government and professional guidelines in order to ensure a high quality of service is maintained at all times.
  • We acknowledge our responsibility in providing customers with a service that is confidential, within the framework of multi-disciplinary working and which also avoids discriminating against race, culture, gender, religion and sexual orientation.

What we do

  • We support schools in achieving high levels of attendance.
  • We regularly check attendance registers, consult and give advice to school staff.
  • We help parents ensure their children attend regularly and punctually and where appropriate initiate court action.

How to contact us

All primary and secondary schools in Oldham have an allocated LA Attendance Officer or Adviser. Many secondary schools also employ their own member of staff who deals with attendance and punctuality matters. Please contact the school direct for further information. Whilst direct contact from members of the public is welcomed, our workload is usually determined through a referral process.
