Diversity & Cohesion Unit

The aims of the Council in delivering equality and diversity are overseen by the Diversity and Cohesion Unit. The Unit has five main roles:

  • Supporting the delivery of equality in all areas of council services.
  • Encouraging community development inclusion and partnership work.
  • Building community cohesion.
  • Ensuring the council address the particular needs of the different communities of the borough.
  • Breaking down barriers of language, gender, ethnicity, age, sexuality and disability.

The Unit has three main strands the first being the Equalities and Diversity Team. The team develop and carry out a range of policies and schemes in order to drive forward equality of opportunity, diversity and social inclusion.

The Community Development Team co-ordinates and contributes to the Council's work to promote community cohesion in Oldham; support the development of the voluntary and community sector; and helps get local people involved in planning and decision making.

The Research Team provide the research and information needed to ensure the Council can address the needs of the diverse communities of the Borough.

The unit is also responsible for the overview of work with refugee and asylum seekers and for the Interpretation and Translation Service.
